There are four keys to making enlightenment work:

• awareness
• effort
• detachment (if Asian) or Truth (if Indo-Euro-Afro-Arabian)
• paying your way from karma

Four things which oxygenate the blood:

• virtue holding power
• love
• animal happiness

The reason why the Jedi doesn't just allow anyone to be a Jedi is twofold: the Light side has to choose them and the Dark Side has to allow them. The dark side has accounts to settle, and the light side has to present the potential to the Master, so that ego isn't creating the dynamic. For the true master this is one and the same.

Looked at less mystically, the commitment necessary is serious (light side) and the need for their karma to be clean (dark side) is also. It's not good to waste people nor the Master's time on bad candidates.
