Unless there would be a need for it, in a Time of extreme need, the Jedi do not take volunteers as apprentices. If you would like to help, the Jedi can often use it, however. And it can be to your advantage to do so in times where the Jedi are not being requested to do the services of the State.

Being an apprentice is a commitment lasting a lifetime, both for the one who would be the apprentice and for their master who will remain responsible or associated for their behaviors.

Purity of heart, personal karma, needs of the whole, and the Force itself dictate when and who can become a Jedi.

Until then, serve your world and perfect yourself. Eventually the Spirit notices such things, like the Jedi.
