The name of a person can be edited in two ways: the edit page or the name fact in the person profile.

Edit page

The edit page opens creating a new person or tapping Edit on a person menu.
Here you can edit the Given name and the Surname.

Name fact

Going to ProfileFactsName you will find the same given name and surname, that you can edit or remove.

The appearance of this page may differ depending on whether advanced tools are active or not.

Without advanced tools (default)

Basically you edit Given name and Surname only.
You can also add a Nickname or a Type, by tapping .

With advanced tools

Activating the advanced tools, inside Name you see that in reality behind the scenes the given name and the surname are written together in Value, with the surname between two slashes. For example:

Homer Jay /Simpson/

This is the correct and preferred way to store a name per the GEDCOM specifications.

Now comes the tricky part.
Tapping Name you will find Given name and Surname again. But these are not the same than before! Per GEDCOM they are two additional fields intended to confirm what is already in Value.
Obviously you don't want to enter twice the same given name and surname.
So in advanced modality is at your choice to:

  • Write Homer Jay /Simpson/ in Value only (remembering the slashes around the surname)
  • Use Given Name and Surname only, without Value

Using both, Value prevails over Given Name and Surname across Family Gem.
Exporting the tree to GEDCOM, Given Name and Surname will be automatically put into Value, if this is not present.
