Social Media Specialist Role

As a Social Media Specialist, you'll be an integral part of the collaborative hackseq organizing team and responsible for relaying interesting community events to a larger and broader audience. In my role as a Social Media Specialist, I monitored Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook accounts as well as blogs to identify posts that would be of interest to hackseq audience. At the moment, Facebook doesn't have much traction and twitter is the main media use. In addition, I took ownership of the audience and so performed research for interesting posts, built upon the previous years' hackseq brand, and responded to a variety of comments to increase owner satisfaction and loyalty. Increased membership by 20% within my time (March until October 2018). I would tweet 5-10 times a week. The contexts of (re)tweets varied between advertising for local events, celebrating achievements of faculty and students, sharing interesting blogs and journal articles, as well as fun facts.

Skill set

  • Proficiency in research is an asset to this role because you will be deciding on interesting material to share with the larger community, build networks with experts, promote community events, celebrate the success of students and faculty.

Outline of Tasks

  • Find out about the lead twitter accounts in the city and follow their activities closely to share with hackseq audience.
  • Advertise interesting community projects with the hackseq members.
  • Identify startups, granting agencies, and successful biotech companies in the area and re(tweet) their interesting activities: e.g. Molecular You, GenomeDX, Contextual Genomics, Abcelera, Genome BC, MSFHR, BC Cancer Foundation, BC Cancer Agency, e @ UBC, etc.
  • Co-celebrate the achievements of faculty and students as well as the broader professional communities by retweeting congratulation posts.
  • Create excitement before the team lead recruitment phase through showcasing outcome of previous years works and expectations.
  • Build relationships with the audience and clients through the tweet posts.
  • Create excitement and encouragement for participants to enrol in hackseq in the recruitment phase.
  • Advertise interesting blogs and journals and discuss some posts.
  • Contact VanHack as well as other clients close to the hackathon date and ask for advertisement of hackseq event.
  • Suggestion for groups to follow-up with: Student Biotechnology Network, ECOSCOPE, GrasPods, Postdoc Association, Science in the City, various UBC and SFU student or academic clubs, Graduate Student Associations at UBC and SFU, LightLabs, RLadies, Women in Tech, Code for Canada, Ladies Learning Code, etc.
