Wild Animals Detection and Alert System (WADAS) is a projet kicked off by me, volunteering for Salviamo L'Orso (SLO) association, and the University of L'Aquila with the intent of creating a research project for the AI-based detection and alert of wildlife in proximity of dangerous areas (e.g., railways tunnels, road crossings).
The intent is to produce a proof of concept (POC) of a detection and warning system for wildlife with the aim of preventing wild animals to perish in car or train accidents. Moreover, the project will start to set requirements and implementation basis for system interaction and adoption as final product (e.g. mobile App, integration with maps, backend, etc.).
The project is to be intended as a non-profitable and open-source one. This to facilitate contribution and reusage to anyone that may want to help, improve and implement same technology all over the world.
The project might leverage AI and other (open source or free to use) technologies.
The SLO association works, toghether with national and regional parks in Abruzzo region (Italy) to preserve local wildlife, and in particular the save the Marsican bear from extinction.
Evolution of this technology will aim to detect and idenify the Marsican brown bear among wildife, to enable ad-hoc monitoring and notifications for the authorities which works everyday to protect this (and many other) species.
See the project Wiki for more details.
NOTE: the owner discourages and forbids any usage of the application for scopes different than animal protection and conservation. Any violation of the intended use will be pursued by law.
In memory of Juan Carrito
With the hope that no other bear will ever perish in car accident.
