Software Longevity
- For supporting and creating software that can last foreverHardware Longevity
- For supporting and creating very long lasting hardware
I have a project I want to put some effort towards: a 2D printer with no strings attached.
The world has been plagued by crippleware, vendor lock-in printers for well over a decade now. A printer will stop functioning within months of purchase, just to get you to buy a new printer, a printer will refuse to allow ink cartridges designed for a different printer, or a different model of a printer. This has gone on for FAR too long.
I am willing to support an effort to have a company that produces long-lasting, free and open source printers. The main requirements are:
- The printer must consist of ONLY FLOSS software, with no proprietary bits
- The printer must accept any ink cartridge from any manufacturer
- The printer must be under $500 (for small printers, adjusted for 2022 December inflation levels)
- No cartridges, just pour the ink into the printer (separate ink slots for separate ink colors, of course, unless mixing it would somehow work)
- There may be one, two... or many companies that already do this, just not very commonly known
- This project is going to shout out the best company, the origin country will be a factor, but not a major one ([WARNING: Politics] unless it is a country currently involved in dangerously severe human rights abuses, such as China, Russia, North Korea, won't list any more countries here)
- Canon
- Dell
- Epson
- HP
This isn't very much of an environmental process (paper = trees, ink = ink + plastic) but it kind of is at the same time (less hardware waste in landfills)
A lot of current devices only are designed to last 1-4 years. This is a problem, as it makes it expensive to consistently own a computer, and it leads to electronic waste.
I want the world to have a computer that can easily last 10 years, and with careful usage, last 50 years or longer. It is doable, for example, the Nintendo Entertainment System is from the year 1985, and discontinued in 1995, but fully functional models are still fairly common 28 years later (as of 2023) we need to build computers that can last this long, and have this durability become common.
The computer should be able to last 50 years without half of the components requiring replacement.
There is a huge environmental problem that has been established by Samsung, Google, Apple, and many other companies caused by a flawed business model of selling a new line of phones every year.
Originally, there were lots of improvements, but nowadays, nothing notable changes on the device except for the camera (the Samsung Galaxy S8, S9, S10, S20, S21, S22, and S23 are examples of this)
Due to (many, but not all) people buying new phones every year, the old phones are considered obsolete, and become electronic waste. Scale this with 2 billion people, and a yearly interval, and you can see that thousands of tons of metal is dumped into landfills every decade. These phones don't need to be tossed, this issue arises from planned obsolescence, and the right to repair, which must be tackled first.
The right to repair is one of the most important rights regarding computer hardware. Unfortunately, it is being trampled on, so that new devices can be created and sold yearly (see: limiting the landfills) there are 2 major battles here:
- The right to repair
- Government ban of planned obsolescence
The right to repair is the right that when you purchase a device from a company, you can take it to anyone (not just its manufacturer or seller) and have it be repaired for a reasonable cost, so that the device can continue being used.
Unfortunately, a lot of companies don't like the right to repair, as it prevents them from selling excess hardware. Examples include Apple using overly complex and rare mechanical parts (such as very uncommon bolts) on its iPhone, or Windows 11 "forcing" people to buy a much more expensive computer.
Planned obsolescence is the practice of selling a computer (notably a cellular phone/"smart" phone) with software that is designed to make the device become slower and unusable over a duration of (commonly) 1-4 years, so that users are enticed to buy the latest phone when it comes out. Some forms of planned obsolescence make the device stop working a decade after the operating system is installed (not related to the UNIX Y2K38 bug or the Windows Y2K bug)
In the future, a computer should be able to rebuild itself upon getting damaged/worn, upon being given the supplies to repair itself.

Make sure to backup your correction with sources and guide me, as I don't know languages other than English well (I plan on getting a translator eventually) please cite wiktionary and other sources in your report. Failing to do so will result in a rejection of the correction being published.

The website for the Computational Longevity Standardization project.
See above. This project is for Computing longevity and longevity standards. Its current goals are to:
-
End planned obsolescence in both software and hardware
-
Catalog various hardware and software and its compliance with these standards.
The main goal is for computers to last at minimum 50 years, and software to work until an eternity after the end of time.
This project has a short history so far.
This project was published on 2021 August 20th at 5:08 pm in compliance with a new goal of software and hardware longevity compliance. It received a little bit of development before being abandoned for 14 days. Its foundation was laid, and a website was created. I experienced my first GitHub pages build fail here with the INSTALL
file, this was later fixed in the 2021 Saturday 4th update.
I finally got to updating this project on 2021 Saturday 4th, mainly fixing the website, and getting it ready and up to date. I also fixed the error by temporarily deleting 2 files. Once I figure out how to add the file back without conflict, I will.
No Beta history to show for this project.

All of my works are free some restrictions. DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) is not present in any of my works.
This sticker is supported by the Free Software Foundation. I never intend to include DRM in my works.
I am ussing the abbreviation "Digital Restrictions Management" instead of the more known "Digital Rights Management" as the common way of addressing it is false, there are no rights with DRM. The spelling "Digital Restrictions Management" is more accurate, and is supported by Richard M. Stallman (RMS) and the Free Software Foundation (FSF)
This section is used to raise awareness for the problems with DRM, and also to protest it. DRM is defective by design and is a major threat to all computer users and software freedom.
