We would like to have a new design for our website.

ideas:

  • make it more obvious that people have to participate to make the side working by adding events themselves
  • maybe use of some design elements of speakerinnen.org to have a brand recognition
  • rethink the tagcloud ( it does not really make sense now, there are too many tags right now )
  • don't use the colors red and blue any more for showing the man or women percentage ( https://blog.datawrapper.de/gendercolor/ )

Over the last few weeks, @jancborchardt and I sat down to go over the site and think about some improvements from the design side. We came up with a versatile logo that could also be expanded/used further for e.g. the data visualisation, stickers, business cards and other printed matter, swag and so on.

🚧Here's the current state and our reasoning behind it 🚧

  • Colour: we agree; as a placeholder we started using the green of speakerinnen as a primary color. We think it looks great and works well as a color to highlight the percentage of women (= not red or pink)
  • Typeface: due to the nature of the logo, we found that Montserrat was the best fit because of its geometric & modern style
  • Logo: a combination of speech bubble and donut chart; it can be used horizontally and vertically with the text, as well as standalone (just the circle) as a favicon, sticker, app icon, social media avatar, etc. In the logo, the donut chart is filled at 50%, and for each conference the fill level will reflect the representation we want to show (e.g. women, or women and non-binary people).

Some other things we thought about regarding the website:

  • Removing the sidebar, as it distracts from the content and has a lot of information that could be its own page; we would just cut and for example have a link to the about page in the header
  • Highlighting the global statistics by for example “showing them off” above the fold in a product page fashion
  • Making adding an event more prominent on the landing page
  • Make search also search across tags; the tag cloud is huge and not really usable but there's no way to search for tags right now
  • Reduce the amount of info shown upfront about each event on the landing page so it's quick to browse

  • We could potentially think about using the conference's primary and secondary colours to show their quota in a personalised way (this could be used to highlight events with proper representation and/or call out events with sub-par representation).

And here are some explorations how the logo, color and design could work as posters, cards and/or flyers:
