Description

This is the majority of the backend work needed for the Content Libraries Beta launch in Sumac.

The Python API

The Python API is entirely defined in cms/lib/xblock/upstream_sync.py, and features:

  • A new UpstreamSyncMixin which is added to all CMS blocks, including:

    • upstream (e.g., the usage key of the library block)
    • upstream_version (e.g., the last-synced library block version number)
    • upstream_display_name (e.g., the library-defined title of the block)
    • upstream_max_attempts (e.g., the library-defined max-attempts for the block)
    • get_customizable_fields(...), allowing blocks to set up further upstream_* fields.
  • The UpstreamLink data object, which holds metadata on a block's relationship with its upstream, with classmethods for fetching the metadata.

  • Three public API functions:

    • sync_from_upstream (e.g., update a block from its library block)
    • fetch_customizable_fields (e.g., update the library-defined defaults, without updating visible content).
    • decline_sync (e.g., decline an update from a library block)

The HTTP API

It is defined and documented here: https://github.com/kdmccormick/edx-platform/blob/kdmccormick/upstream-proto/cms/djangoapps/contentstore/rest_api/v2/views/downstreams.py#L2

Temporary UI

This PR includes @bradenmacdonald 's basic, dev-only UI from this PR: kdmccormick#16 . We will improve this UI before the Sumac launch, but having it landed will aid with testing and further development over the next week.

We display an icon when content comes from a content library (see on the left):

Screenshot

Or if the link is broken, it says that:

Screenshot

And when an update is available, it displays a working "Update" button

Screenshot

It does not yet have a modal to allow you to accept/reject/preview the changes.

Known issues

Definitely to be fixed before Sumac:

Might be fixed before Sumac, definitely before Teak:

Supporting Information

ADR: https://github.com/kdmccormick/edx-platform/blob/kdmccormick/upstream-proto/docs/decisions/0020-upstream-block.rst

Testing

Basic setup (do this first)

  • Create a (v2) content library with a component
  • Copy the component from a library to a course unit
  • Ensure: the little "Sourced from a library" icon shows up, but "Update Available" does NOT show up.

Edit + Update

  • Edit the library component.
  • Refresh the course unit page.
    • Ensure: "Update Available" shows up
  • Click "Update Available" to sync from the library
    • Ensure: Page reloads, with updated library block. "Update Available" button is gone.

Overrides

  • Edit the library component including updates to both:
    • a customizable field, like the title or max_attempts
    • a non-customizable field, like the problem/html data, or the video URL
  • Refresh the course unit page
    • Ensure: "Update Available" shows up
  • Edit the course-local instance of your library component, including an edit to both a customizable and a non-customizable field (ideally the same ones you edited above)
  • Click "Update Available" to sync from the library
    • Ensure: Page reloads, with updated library block. "Update Available" button is gone.
    • Ensure: Your course-local edit to the customizable field remains intact.
    • Ensure: Your course-local edit to the non-customizable is blown away, and instead you see the library-level edit manifest

"Restore to library default" (Sumac version)

In Sumac, we won't have full "Restore a field to its library default" functionality. We'll have a halfway version instead. More details. Here's how to test the halfway version, using display_name (although any customizable field should work) and a linked library/course component pair:

  • In your library: Set your component's title to My Upstream Title 1
  • In your course: Click "Update Available"
    • Ensure that the course-local title becomes My Upstream Title 1.
  • In your course: Set your component's title to My Downstream Title
  • In your library: Now set your component's title to My Upstream Title 2
  • In your course: Click "Update Available"
    • Ensure that the course-local title remains My Downstream Title.
  • In your course: Set your component's title to My Upstream Title 2 (this is our halfway "restore default" mechanism)
  • In your library: Now set your component's title to My Upstream Title 3
  • In your course: Click "Update Available"
    • Ensure that the course-local title becomes My Upstream Title 3.

Export/Import

  • Edit the library component including updates to both:
    • a customizable field, like the title or max_attempts
    • a non-customizable field, like the problem/html data, or the video URL
  • Refresh the course unit page
    • Ensure: "Update Available" shows up
  • Export your course to OLX
  • Import the OLX back into the same course run, and navigate to your library-linked component.
    • Ensure: "Update Available" is shown, and clicking it works as expected.
  • Now import the OLX into a different course run on the same instance, and navigate to your library-linked component in that course run.
    • Ensure: "Update Available" is shown, and clicking it works as expected.
  • Now import the OLX into a different instance, and navigate to your library-linked component.
    • Ensure: The content says it is has a broken library link.

@bradenmacdonald So I've got this draft version of upstream sync working, implemented with XBlock fields and handlers. Using the XBlock fields and handlers for this was nice because it gave me persistence, URL routing, and OLX serialization for free.

But now I'm wondering if this is bad approach because we'll need to support Units and Subsections in libraries next, and we've agreed that those structural blocks should stop being XBlocks eventually.

The alternative I see is to:

  • use Django models to store upstream links, upstream defaults, and upstream overrides,
  • define REST/Python APIs for managing them, and
  • handle OLX serialization as special case

Thoughts?

use Django models to store upstream links, upstream defaults, and upstream overrides,

Okay, I started prototyping this, and it's easier said than done. Particularly, if you imagine a model like this, there's a question of whether we FK to entities or entityverisons:

class UpstreamDownstreamLink(models.Model):
    """
    Link a piece of content (the downstream) to a source for updates (the upstream).
    """
    # Pretty straightforward -- FK to a particular upstream version, and then update the
    # version whenever sync happens.
    upstream = models.ForeignKey(PublishableEntityVersion)

    # Which one of these is right?? Neither?

    # This one would apply to all versions of the downstream component, so it would play weird
    # draft/publish, and would fail if we ever added an "undo" button to studio.
    downstream = models.OneToOneField(PublishableEntity)

    # This seems more correct, but would require updating every time a new version of the downstream
    # component is created. Perhaps this would work fine as a cache, but it seems wrong as the authoritative
    # data source.
    downstream = models.OneToOneField(PublishableEntityVersion)

It seems to me, then, that we do want to persist upstream metadata using XBlocks fields, so that version management works as we expect. Still, I'm open to feedback on whether we should use XBlock handlers vs. build a separate REST API for getting/settings links and syncing from upstream.

@kdmccormick I think it's fine to implement this with fields and handlers for now; as you said, it gives you a lot for free. It even gives us most of the Unit and Subsection functionality for free, I think. Yes, we want to implement those differently in the future but we aren't going to be able to make that change anytime soon, and I think we can worry about how library sync works in that case after we have the new design for how that stuff works. Right now it's mostly an unknown.

e.g. I have an idea for an "outline" object that encodes the course hierarchy and library content and much more, and if we implemented it that way, we'd have to re-implement even your django model based prototype. Or previously I had proposed this compositor architecture which is different yet again. So I think it's not worth planning for that too much until we've got an ADR and buy-in about what the future direction is for the non-XBlock way to represent hierarchy.

Just a minor question about the API endpoint in the docstring (whether it's intended to be /api/contentstore/v2/...). Please consider the remaining logging request as optional.

At some point, we'd like to be able to give an upstream ID and get the list of all its downstreams. I'm assuming we'll need some kind of new data model to track that before we're able to implement something like that in the future, right?

Yep. Indeed, we'll need something like a DownstreamUpstreamLink table, which the upstream_sync API writes to and keeps updated.

Awesome work, @kdmccormick and very nice clean code 💯

I didn't test import-export but I tested various other things and it was working as advertised:

(Not asking for changes now.) Personally, I've really come to appreciate a clear separation between 403 and 404 errors for things like this. Makes debugging, messaging to users, and supporting users much easier. "Leaking" what IDs exist or do not exist in a course is not really a big security concern, and would only apply to users who somehow have permission to read some parts of the course but not other parts - a tiny subset of user requests.

It could be nicer in the future to move UpstreamSyncMixin to its own file? It seems fairly separable from everything else in this file.

Yeah, I'm also thinking that might be necessary if we're to make these fields available in the LMS (for analytics) without exposing the whole upstream_sync API to LMS.

I'll leave it for now, but I will likely do this refactoring when it becomes necessary.

This introdues the idea of "upstream" and "downstream" content,
where downstreams (like course components) can pull content updates from
upstreams (like learning core-backed content library blocks). This
supports the upcoming Content Libraries Relaunch Beta for Sumac.
New features include:

* A new XBlockMixin: UpstreamSyncMixin.
* A new CMS Python API: cms.lib.xblock.upstream_sync
* A new CMS JSON API: /api/contentstore/v2/downstreams
* A temporary, very basic UI for syncing from Content Library blocks

fix: don't wrap HTML data with newlines when serializing for LC (openedx#35532)

When serializing to OLX, the Learning Core runtime wraps HTML content in
CDATA to avoid having to escape every individual `<`, `>`, and `&`. The
runtime also puts newlines around the content within the CDATA,
So, given HTML content `...`, we get `<![CDATA[\n...\n]]>`.

The problem is that every time you serialize an HTML block to OLX, it
adds another pair of newlines. These newlines aren't visible to the end
users, but they do make it so that importing and exporting content never
reached a stable, aka "canonical" form. It also makes unit testing
difficult, because the value of `html_block.data` becomes a moving
target.

We do not believe these newlines are necessary, so we have removed them
from the `CDATA` block, and added a unit test to ensure that HTML blocks
having a canonical serialization.

fix(deps): update dependency underscore to v1.13.1 [security]

Soft delete collections (openedx#35496)

* refactor: use django signals to trigger LIBRARY_COLLECTION events

* refactor: use collection usage_key as search document id

This change standardises the search document "id" to be a meilisearch ID
generated from the usage key, for all types of indexed objects.

This is important for collections so we can locate the collection
document in the search index solely from the data provided by the
LIBRARY_COLLECTION_DELETED event (library_key + collection_key), even if
the collection has been deleted from the database.

* refactor: avoid fetching more data than we have to.

* get_library_collection_usage_key and
  searchable_doc_tags_for_collection do not need a Collection object;
  the usage key can be created from the library_key and collection_key.

* updated searchable_doc_for_collection to require the parts of the
  collection usage key + an optional collection. This allows us to
  identify the collection's search document from its usage key without
  requiring an existing Collection object (in case it's been deleted).
  Also removes the edge case for indexing Collections not associated
  with a ContentLibrary -- this won't ever really happen.

* feat: remove soft- and hard-deleted collections from search index

* feat: adds library_component_usage_key to content_libraries.api

* refactor: send CONTENT_OBJECT_ASSOCIATON_CHANGED on django model signals

so that added/removed collections are removed/re-added to component documents.

Special case: When a collection is soft-deleted/restored, we detect this
in the search index and update the collection's component documents
directly, without a CONTENT_OBJECT_ASSOCIATON_CHANGED signal.

Operators Note: In newer versions of ubuntu the MD4 hashing algorithm
is disabled by default. To enable it the openssl config needs to be
updated in a manner similar to what's being done here. Alternatively,
you can set the `FEATURES['ENABLE_BLAKE2B_HASHING']` setting to `True`
which will switch to a newer hashing algorithm where MD4 was previously
used.

Because this hashing is being used as a part of the edx-platform caching
mechanism, this will effectively clear the cache for the items that use
this hash. The will impact any items where the cache key might have been
too big to store in memcache so it's hard to predict exactly which items
will be impacted.

BREAKING CHANGE: See the operator note above for more details as this
may break for users transitioning from Ubuntu 20.04 to newer versions.

This commit fixes a bug introduced by the new VerificationAttempt model. The expiration_datetime field is nullable. Other IDV models in the verify_student application have a default value for expiration_date, so they are typically not null, despite being nullable.

This commit updates code that queries this field to function correctly when the value of expiration_datetime is None. In this case, a None expiration_datetime indicates a non-expiring attempt.

feat!: Remove outdated Libraries Relaunch cruft (openedx#35644)

The V2 libraries project had a few past iterations which were never
launched. This commit cleans up pieces from those which we don't need
for the real Libraries Relaunch MVP in Sumac:

* Remove ENABLE_LIBRARY_AUTHORING_MICROFRONTEND,
  LIBRARY_AUTHORING_FRONTEND_URL, and
  REDIRECT_TO_LIBRARY_AUTHORING_MICROFRONTEND, all of which are obsolete
  now that library authoring has been merged into
  https://github.com/openedx/frontend-app-authoring.
  More details on the new Content Libraries configuration settings are
  here: openedx/frontend-app-authoring#1334

* Remove dangling support for syncing V2 (learning core-backed) library
  content using the LibraryContentBlock. This code was all based on an
  older understanding of V2 Content Libraries, where the libraries were
  smaller and versioned as a whole rather then versioned by-item.
  Reference to V2 libraries will be done on a per-block basis using
  the upstream/downstream system, described here:
  https://github.com/openedx/edx-platform/blob/master/docs/decisions/0020-upstream-downstream.rst
  It's important that we remove this support now so that OLX course
  authors don't stuble upon it and use it, which would be buggy and
  complicate future migrations.

* Remove the "mode" parameter from LibraryContentBlock. The only
  supported mode was and is "random". We will not be adding any further
  modes. Going forward for V2, we will have an ItemBank block for
  randomizing items (regardless of source), which can be synthesized
  with upstream referenced as described above. Existing
  LibraryContentBlocks will be migrated.

* Finally, some renamings:

  * LibraryContentBlock -> LegacyLibraryContentBlock
  * LibraryToolsService -> LegacyLibraryToolsService
  * LibrarySummary -> LegacyLibrarySummary

  Module names and the old OLX tag (library_content) are unchanged.

Closes: openedx/frontend-app-authoring#1115

feat: adaptive display of links

temp: logs for unsubscribe event (openedx#35652)

feat: removed extra spaces from start and end of content (openedx#35647)

feat: added waffle flag for new notification view (openedx#35569)

feat!: hide courses in /courses based on catalog visibility

Previously, courses were always displayed on the LMS /courses page,
independently of their catalog visibility attribute. This meant that
even with visibility="none" courses were being displayed. This was very
counter-intuitive.

With this change, courses are displayed only when their visibility is
set to "both".

This change is flagged as breaking because it has the potential to
affect course catalogs in existing platforms.

To test this change, go to http(s)://LMS/courses as an anonymous user.
Pick a visible course and go to its "advanced settings" in the studio.
Set "Course visibility in catalog" to "about" or "none". Then, clear the
cache with the following command:

    ./manage.py lms shell -c "from django.core.cache import cache; cache.clear()"

Open the /courses page again: the course should no longer be visible.

feat: new view & API calls to serve content library assets (openedx#35639)

This commit adds a new view to serve static assets for content
libraries, along with Content Library API calls to add, delete, and get
metadata about these assets. These assets come from Learning Core and
should ONLY BE ACCESSED FROM STUDIO. Users must have read access to the
library in order to see an asset in that library.

This also re-implements video transcript support for content libraries
and re-enables some previously disabled tests around it.

feat: Allow specifying a version when loading a v2 XBlock (openedx#35626)

chore: delete unused requirements.txt file (openedx#35637)

As far as I know, this file is unused. It was not updated since 2022. If
it is actually being used, then maybe we should use instead a file from

Currently all PRs are failing on an INTERNAL ERROR in MyPY that seems to

feat: Upstream Sync with Content Library Blocks (openedx#34925)

This introdues the idea of "upstream" and "downstream" content,
where downstreams (like course components) can pull content updates from
upstreams (like learning core-backed content library blocks). This
supports the upcoming Content Libraries Relaunch Beta for Sumac.
New features include:

* A new XBlockMixin: UpstreamSyncMixin.
* A new CMS Python API: cms.lib.xblock.upstream_sync
* A new CMS JSON API: /api/contentstore/v2/downstreams
* A temporary, very basic UI for syncing from Content Library blocks

Implements:
https://github.com/kdmccormick/edx-platform/blob/kdmccormick/upstream-proto/docs/decisions/0020-upstream-block.rst

Co-authored-by: Braden MacDonald <braden@opencraft.com>

feat: versioned asset support for Learning Core XBlock runtime

Add support for displaying static assets in the Learing Core XBlock
runtime via "/static/asset-name" style substitutions in the OLX. This is
currently used for new Content Library components.

Static asset display is version-aware, so viewing older versions of the
XBlock content via the embed view will show the appropriate assets for
that version.

test: add data.py to acceptable isolated app imports

Per OEP-49, both api.py and data.py are allowed to be imported into
other apps:
