Setting up Firebase App Tester

Norbel AMBANUMBEN edited this page Mar 14, 2024 · 1 revision

Step 1: Sign in with Google to accept the invitation

On an Android device, open the invitation in your email. When prompted, sign in with Google and accept the invitation to test the app.

✨ Keep the following in mind:

After opening an invitation to test an app, you can sign in with any Google account to accept the invitation, not just the account to which the invitation was originally sent. Invitations can only be accepted once before becoming invalid.

Once you accept an invitation, you're given access to install the test app. You also receive build notification emails from Firebase when the app's developer distributes a new build and includes you as a tester.

✨ Tip: If you don't want to go through your email to accept new app invitations, you can also access your pending app invitations directly in the Firebase App Tester app.

Step 2: Download Firebase App Tester

If you haven't already, download the Firebase App Tester app, which lets you install and access all your test apps in one place. You can download Firebase App Tester from the in-browser prompt that appears after you accept the invite, or by navigating to appdistribution.firebase.google.com on your Android device.

If this is your first time installing Firebase App Tester, you'll need to sign into the app with the same Google account you used to accept the invitation.

✨ Note: If you are having a problem to installing unknown apps

  • Open the Settings app on your Android device.
  • In the Settings menu, tap Apps.
  • Tap Special app access (or Advanced > Special app access).
  • Tap Install unknown apps.
  • Select an app to use to install an APK file—your browser and file management apps are the best options here.

Step 3: Download the build in Firebase App Tester

In Firebase App Tester, select the app you want to install and tap Download/Upgrade/Downgrade. Apps you install through App Tester are automatically added to your device's home screen.

Step 4: Set up the app to run OONI Run V2 links.

  • Open the Settings app on your Android device.
  • In the Settings menu, tap Apps.
  • Select the OONI Probe/Dev app.
  • Open Set as default.
  • Enable Open supported links.
  • Select web addresses.
  • Enable run.ooni.io and run.test.ooni.org
