Creating a story is as simple as uploading a traditional item in Omeka. In fact, it may be a bit easier. This guide assumes you have already installed and activated the Curatescape Admin Helper plugin, using the default settings.

Log in and navigate to Items, then click the Add New button. You will see 4 tabs (Dublin Core, Item Type Metadata, Files, Tags, Map). Each tab includes a yellow "How-to" box that contains useful tips. Fill in the fields for each tab.

  • Dublin Core is used for the Title, Creator(s), and Subject(s). Use the Add Input button when adding more than one Creator or Subject.
  • In the Item Type Metadata tab, choose Curatescape Story from the dropdown to reveal custom fields for your story. the main text content goes in the Story field and should be at least a few paragraphs long. Complete as many of the fields as possible for the best result. Refer to the Content Layout Guide for additional information. Use the Add Input button when adding more than one Factoid or Related Resource.
  • Add files to the Files tab. After saving your item, you will need to return to this section to add additional metadata for each file. You can re-order files by dragging and dropping into the desired order.
  • Add tags in the Tags tab. Be sure to use the green Add Tags button before saving the item.
  • In the Map tab, enter a search term, address, or coordinates into the input field and use the Find button to add a pin to the map. Alternately, you may use your mouse pointer to place a pin directly on the map.

Press Add Item to save the item for the first time.

After saving, return to the item record and click the edit links for each uploaded file. Use the form to add file-level metadata. This metadata is used to create the captions and list views for each file.

Important Notes

  • The first image in your file list will be used as the representative thumbnail for the entry. This image will be used in various places on the site and in the app, so choosing a good first image is recommended. Drag and drop to change the order of files.
  • Be sure to review the Formatting requirements to reduce errors and ensure maximum compatibility.
  • Be sure to include at least one image file in each story.
  • Be sure to add a map location to each story.
  • It is strongly recommended to compose text within the Omeka interface or to use a plain text editor, such as the ones recommended on the Formatting requirements page.
  • It is strongly recommended that each story have a Subtitle and Lede, as well as at least one Subject term and one Tag.
  • To meet accessibility guidelines, be sure to add caption information to each file and include relevant location information in the Street Address and Access Info fields.
