Another idea for a visual refresh - this is a screen shot taken from a hack day project I worked on to teach people about accessibility best practices. Perhaps we could have something like this for Obo Next. I'm not suggesting we follow this design to a T, but maybe take some cues from it.
Goals:
Style is less book-like and more interactive-webpage like - could reduce a stifling library feeling
Interactive components are clearly identified and made enticing ("Try It!"). Obo wouldn't necessarily have interactive components like this (hopefully one day), but questions could be made to be similarly enticing.
Next button made more obvious (This design needs a previous page button)
Sense of progression made clear (Progress bar at the upper right). That progress bar could reduce the need of the navigation (Thinking hide the nav by default, but still provide a way to pull it up - not shown in this mockup)
