Reason for Targeting Ubuntu rather than Debian?

For "Servers" I'm more inclined to run base-level Debian, is there any particular reason for the requirement of Ubuntu.
If you can package and deploy Debian you can easily install that package on Ubuntu as well. I would always preference targeting the base system over adding a Distro-specific requirement.

Thanks for the feedback, the main reason the builds are for Ubuntu is that GitHub action has Ubuntu runners instead of Debian runners. I'd expect it will built on Debian to, probably the build instructions also apply to Debian.

I did the build on Debian, built well not issues apart from missing dependencies (apt get sorted that out), however it listened on 127.0.0.1 and couldn't work out how to set it to listen to a different IP (headless instance server only, no GUI), ran the client on macOS (built nicely, however, it wouldn't connect.)

The two computers were on two different VLANs one could ping the other. I'm gonna install the Windows version to try out. Also will run both on the same VLAN hopefully it's not my network. I'll report back.

Really interested in the project and would like to contribute (helpfully and positively) where I can, not much of a CPP dev, but mostly a bit of a NodeJS noob.

By default traintastic-server only listens on localhost (most safe), but for headless servers this is not ideal. You need to edit the configuration manually.

The server configuration ~/.config/traintastic-server/settings.json must be edited/created:

I have a suggestion of adding a CLI arg of --ipaddress and --port or similar so it can be overridden at run time.

This would allow for traintastic server to be run as a systems service, without worrying about config paths.
Is there a CLI option currently to force a "config" directory? It's not always beneficial to run "server" apps from local user's home dir and run instead from a "/var/lib/traintastic" or "/data" especially if running/deploying the server in a Docker container.
I use LXC (debian) as my target deployment environment.

traintastic-server has the --datadir option, see https://traintastic.org/en-us/manual/master#command-line-options , does that work for you?
