Once this is done, can I pull the key map up and make some scripts to manipulate the raspi GPIO?

I'm not sure what you mean once this is done, the config files works for X windows on a Raspberry Pi- are you having problems with it?

Hi! Thank you for responding, I realize I didnt make the clearest comment now after coming back to it.

I’m looking to plug a usb cable (no Bluetooth) sixaxis PS3 controller into the raspberry pi and register button presses to hack as a lesson in robotics for my son. I don’t have another joystick style object in the house, but I was looking for a way to make LED’s light up with button presses from the controller. And after that maybe get fancier like PWM and H bridges etc.

Honestly even getting pygame going would be a triumph, I guess I didn’t realize how much I needed to learn to be able to read USB device inputs. I don’t even know what an X window is.
