Starting a new shopizer project

Hi,
We are starting a new Shopizer project and would like to make some small customizations and add some APIs. We do not want to fork the repo and start making changes, as it will have an impact during the upgrades and resolving conflicts can be a nightmare. Is there a community suggested approach where I add sm-shop and all other modules to my POM of my own spring boot application? If so, can you please point me to a demo app or a document? Thank you very much.
