Future steps could of course be a proper blog through a static page generator like nikola, Jekyll, etc. It would be great if there were a fediverse account, and/or something else to follow with less granular updates than following this entire project on github.

Great point! I've been thinking about setting up a shared SSG blog for Rust-Edu with an RSS and/or Atom feed. We have some people interested in doing our social media: you should contact them by joining our Zulip chat at http://rust-edu.org/zulip, or I can do it if you prefer. I don't think this is too hard.
I'd like to follow this project and I'm not sure github is the best way to do so.
For a very simple start, Github releases could be "abused" to work like a blog:
