[BUG]: Workspace number applet is extremely slow

The workspace numbers that show in my panel have a background colour for which workspace is currently active. This background colour would switch to my current workspace within milliseconds, but after my recent update today, it takes ~1s, which is terribly slow.

Note that this is the case when I use Super+{n} to traverse workspaces. Clicking the numbers themselves reflect it immediately.

I also have the same issue, both when using Super + number and with 4 fingers gesture on the touchpad.
