How to open the dialog from button click rather than keyboard shortcut?

I'm trying to build something that works like tailwind's documentation. Where the search bar turns into the dialog for search. Does anyone know how to do this in a good way?

I'm using Nextjs 14 and I'm struggling how to have a global "open" state.
