Currently, there is no straightforward method for migrating data and configurations from Amazon OpenSearch Serverless to Amazon OpenSearch domains. This lack of a seamless migration path limits customers’ flexibility to move workloads between different OpenSearch deployment models. Users may face challenges in transferring data, metadata, and configurations efficiently without incurring downtime or disruption.
What solution would you like?
Introduce a migration feature that supports seamless transitions from Amazon OpenSearch Serverless to Amazon OpenSearch domains. The migration feature should:
Provide automated tools to migrate data, index configurations, and associated metadata with minimal manual intervention.
Ensure zero downtime during the migration process to avoid disruptions to production workloads.
Allow for the migration of additional features such as dashboards, index templates, and mappings to maintain consistency across deployments.
Offer a rollback mechanism in case of issues, ensuring that customers can revert to their previous state without affecting operations.
What alternatives have you considered?
Manual Export and Import: Users could manually export data from OpenSearch Serverless and import it into an OpenSearch domain. However, this approach is error-prone, time-consuming, and requires extensive manual configuration to ensure consistency across features like dashboards and mappings.
Third-Party Migration Tools: There are third-party solutions available that might support partial migration needs, but they may lack specific compatibility or integration capabilities to handle the unique requirements of OpenSearch Serverless and domains.
Do you have any additional context?
Supporting migrations between Amazon OpenSearch Serverless and OpenSearch domains would provide customers with greater flexibility to choose the best deployment model based on their needs. This feature would simplify migration processes, reduce downtime and disruptions, and enhance the overall adoption of Amazon OpenSearch. Additionally, offering comprehensive migration capabilities would encourage users to experiment with different OpenSearch deployment models without concerns over complex or risky transitions.
