Positional Audio in Audio Wizard doesn't work for Mac. Works well for Windows on the same machine.

I'm trying to use Mumble with Minetest. I've installed all the necessary software (client, wrapper, Mumble) but it doesn't work.

I'm on Mac OS and I just noted that this feature doesn't even work in the Audio Wizard of Mumble (1.3.3). So I installed Mumble in Windows on Parallels Desktop on the same machine and realized that Positional Audio works well in that setup.

Is there something I can do about the configuration so that Positional Audio also works in Mac OS?

What does "it does not work" mean exactly?

have you verified that all positional audio related settings are the same on Windows and macOS?

Good question. Sorry for not being more accurate...

Actually, I can hear the codec test message. But there is no impact on where I put the dot in that frame.

This happens right after installing Mumble and running the wizard. So further Positional Audio settings like minimal distance or bloom should not have any impact, yet, right?

Indeed but perhaps there are different defaults on different OS? I don't think so, but I would like to rule this out for sure.

I've removed Mumble completely from Mac OS - including all .plist files etc - and reinstalled it. The behavior was the same.

Are the AirPods perhaps being used as mono device instead of stereo?

I've got no idea if the AirPods can be configured like that. But I've double checked with another set of headphones - with the same result.

Then, I've switched to the default device. And, hey, that worked.

Please keep in mind that the AirPods work fine with Windows, though.

There obviously is something different on the software level. See the two attached screen shots. With the headphones, there are only two circles, one fixed and one rotating. With the default device, there are two more fixed circles.

Yeah that probably means that either Mumble recognizes your headphones as Mono ourput devices or it is unable to fetch the relative speaker orientation. Both options make posirional audio impossible.

Well, I just tested stereo effect with my AirPods using a Youtube video. All seems to be fine.
In fact, there is an option in MacOS system settings to map stereo to mono audio. But that option is not enabled for me.

Yeah that may be but my best guess atm is that these headphones don't offer the needed information via the API that every other speaker seems to use. If that really is the case, then that'd explain why Mumble doesn't figure that out 🤷
