This is funny:

> import qualified Data.ByteString.UTF8 as BU                  
BU> BU.toString (BU.fromString "\65534") == "\65533"          
True
BU> BU.toString (BU.fromString "\65535") == "\65533"          
True

U+FFFE and U+FFFF are not valid Unicode
