COMPUTING

This week BeagleBoard announced the BeagleBone Black Wireless, a new SBC that ditches the standard ethernet port, replacing it with wifi and bluetooth capabilities. It has a 1GHz cpu, 512MB RAM, 4GB on board memory with Debian pre-installed, and more. No word on the price yet.

DRONES

Dr. Sam Aldhaher from Imperial College London uploaded a video of a drone being powered completely wirelessly with no internal battery or onboard power source. This is achieved using magnetic induction.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Up until recently, AI had only been good at learning 2D games, such as space invaders, and other atari games. Now researchers at Cornell University have shown off their deep reinforcement learning architecture that can tackle 3D environments, in games like FPS classic, DOOM.

ROBOTICS

FarmBot is a cool open source project which aims to create a fully autonomous farming platform, which can plant, water, kill weeds, and more using technology similar to a 3D printer.

MESH NETWORKS

goTenna announced the new KickStarter for the goTenna Mesh, a mesh networking node that pairs up with a smartphone, and creates a fully off-the-grid wireless mesh for communicating over. This looks pretty amazing, would love to learn more.

3D PRINTING

Researchers at Nottingham Trent University have created a lifelike 3D printed body, complete with internal organs, for use in training surgeons on dealing with emergency trauma situations.

In other medical news concerning 3D printing, surgeons have successfully tested a new type of 3D printed biomaterial used for bone grafts. The goal is to implant this material onto affected areas, and stimulate real bone growth.

VIDEOS

Two interesting talks this week. The first is by Balaji Srinivasen, the creator of 21 co, and he talks about the company, and the potential it has for creating a new machine payable web. The next video is about quantum computing and the challenges with figuring out and building these mythical machines.

THIS WEEK ON NODE

Been pretty busy this week. Dead Drop 3 was released, with more computer security news. I also did a quick overview video of the Raspberry Pi Foundation's newest Raspbian release, PIXEL.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LQppf_Ynq0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bigVLTWdlyA

I showed you a cool project which aims to remove all traces of Google from the Chromium browser, in order to protect privacy and security. Finally, I did an overview of the Ledger Nano S, a cool little multifunction USB stick that can handle secure bitcoin payments, two factor authentication, and more.
