CYBER DUMP 16 / UNDER SEA CABLES, VR TANK, DELIVERY DRONES, CREEPY ROBOTS

Welcome to Cyber Dump 16, your weekly look at what's happening in this insane age of technology that we live in. As always, all source links mentioned are below.

DATA

I saw this awesome link on Reddit. It shows a map of all the known underwater cables that carry data all over the planet. A pretty astonishing feat if you think about it. You can also see which companies own what, and where exactly they make ground.

ROBOTICS

A team from MIT and elsewhere have designed a tiny origami robot. The patient swallows it via a capsule, and once in the body, it unfurls and can complete specific tasks like removing foreign objects, healing wounds, or delivering medicine.

In other robot news, Robotics Systems Lab uploaded a new video for ANYmal, a quadrupedal robot with extremely versatile limbs, meaning it can adapt to lots of different environments.

CLOTHING

Google's Project Jacquard have developed EBB, a type of thread that changes colour depending on the electrical input. Imagine being able to change your tshirt every day with a brand new design.

DIY

A youtube user by the name of Freddy has created an awesome remote control tank which acts like a roaming VR camera. Using a whole bunch of technologies like the Raspberry Pi, Google Cardboard, Android Smartphone, an Xbox controller and more, it streams live stereoscopic video to the phone, so it feels like you're roaming around, 6 inches off the ground.

DRONES

Researchers at the German Aerospace Center have released a video of a drone landing on a moving car travelling at 75 kilometers per hour. Imagine postal drones delivering your mail everyday, and linking up with moving postal vans to collect new packages.

In more delivery drone news, DHL have announced the Parcelcopter 3.0, their newest flying machine that does both deliveries and pickups to remote parts of the Bavarian Alps.

CERTBOT

The EFF have announced CertBot, a new tool that helps you configure Let's Encrypt's SSL and TLS certificates on different server setups. Just enter the server software and operating system you are using, and it will show you exactly how to configure HTTPS encryption.

VIDEOS

Two short documentaries this week. The first is about electronic waste and the surprising journey it goes on. This is what really happens when you donate your old electrical junk to a charity.

The next is about how robots are playing an ever increasing part in our lives, specifically showing a few interesting, and slightly creepy examples from Japan.

THIS WEEK ON NODE

This week I made a video about waybackpack, a command line utility that lets you download the entire archive.org history of any URL.

Famicoman did an interesting interview with the founder of Hermicity, an ambitious project involving hermits, drones, ethereum and soylent.

I also wanted to mention SSL on the NODE site. Tumblr doesn't allow https for custom domains, so I'm either going to have to do without encryption or move everything off the platform. Let me know what you think. Other than that, I'm working on a couple new hardware guides, and they should be ready soon. Thanks for watching.
