A student was very confused by the X near the limiter they selected. Could it by a checkmark or highlighted instead?

Interesting! I took a look at a few e-commerce sites, and it looks like a checkbox is a much more common pattern for these facets:
target

That pattern gives a clearer indication that the facet is selected, and gives a perhaps more understandable way to de-select it.

This affects both FindIt and CommunityArchive. I'll ask around in the Blacklight community to see what others are doing (and if they would be amenable to Blacklight changing these to checkboxes)

Some responses when I asked about this on the code4lib slack:

  • I think I've seen checkbox often denote "OR"ing (union) of facets within a category, so it may not be an apples-to-apples comparison with the implicit overall "AND"ing (intersection) of facets that is most common in BL catalogs that I'm aware of. What behavior (OR/AND) applies to the examples you're thinking of? In any case, it's definitely an interesting topic, and surely a good topic to consider with fresh eyes.
  • This has been my take as well. The advanced search gem has a checkbox facet selection UI and does an OR of the values instead of the AND that our results are typically doing.
