Discussed in #49

I haven't fully fleshed out this idea yet, so I'd like to start a discussion around it.

As far as I can see, there are opportunities to leverage some of the empty space in the omnibox to add in a tool tray.
Here are a few ideas off the top of my head:

  • The entire base of the case is 2-3" tall and could be modified to fit a tray that could slide in and out. This would be incredibly handy to store convenient tools that would be necessary to make modifications to either the case, internal components, etc.
  • The CPU slot could have a small tray if a CPU is not being used to make better use of the space instead of the blank slot cover
  • A new lid could be designed to accommodate a tool drawer system on top of the case
  • The main body could have holes for "hooks" to behave similarly to pegboards to allow for hooking all sorts of additional tools and components to the main body of the case

I'd be really curious to hear what other people think about this!

I'm adding this as a feature request for tracking purposes. I'd still love to hear input in the discussion thread, too.

In my case I am going to attach the Omnibox to the left side of a Elegoo Neptune 3 sort of a reversed Ender3. if I was going to have a drawer it would be a pullout the front and probably under the power supply I would think

Wow, I just saw I never replied to this, @wizard311! I'm really sorry. I'm keeping your idea in mind. See below.

I implemented part of this issue for 0.9.10, the CPU Tray drawer: https://github.com/jon-harper/OmniBox/tree/0.9.10-beta/Trays/CPU/Storage%20Tray

I've opened issue #124 for tracking the Gridfinity idea.

Since the cases will be stackable again, I'm thinking of implementing the base tray idea as a separate piece that the case sits on top of. That's in issue #125.

Finally, I made a placeholder issue for the CPU tray implementation (#126) and am removing the 0.9.10 milestone from this issue. I'll keep it open until the child issues are closed.
