U.S. Congressional Districts

This package contains a custom map of the U.S. Congressional Districts for the 116th Congress, based on the U.S. Census Bureau mapping data, that can be used with Salesforce Einstein Analytics. It also contains a custom field on the Contact object to contain the district information as well as a validation rule for that field to ensure that data stored there will properly index the map.

Finally, I have included a Mockaroo schema and dataset to assist the generation of dummy state and district information for demos.

Here is an example of the custom map in action:

Congressional Districts on Dashboard

Once this package is deployed, you will have a new custom field on the Contact object called Congressional District as well as a validation rule on that field to make sure that it can properly index the districts on the custom map:

Validation Rule

Of course, there is no reason that the custom field can't be placed on any other object. It just made sense to put it on the Contact object since that object already has addresses associated with it.

Creating a new map widget that displays the Congressional districts is very straightforward:

How to Deploy This Package to Your Org

I am a pre-sales Solutions Engineer for Salesforce and I develop solutions for my customers to demonstrate the capabilities of the amazing Salesforce platform. This package represents functionality that I have used for demonstration purposes and the content herein is definitely not ready for actual production use; specifically, it has not been tested extensively nor has it been written with security and access controls in mind. By installing this package, you assume all risk for any consequences and agree not to hold me or my company liable. If you are OK with that ...

Using Mockaroo to Generate Dummy Demo Data for the Map

The custom map uniquely identifies districts using the string <Two-Character State Code>-<Two-Digit District Number>, for example, "VA-02" or "TX-43". In order to make sure that we don't generate invalid districts (for example, "VA-53" -- Virginia only has 11 districts), it is necessary to upload this US Districts by State dataset, which contains a list of the states and the total number of districts each state has, into Mockaroo.

From there, it's easy to get Mockaroo to generate random state abbreviations and random districts based on those states (in the correct form to index the map) using the US Districts by State dataset:

Schema Snippet

I have included the JSON for the schema shown above so you can import it into Mockaroo and get up and running quickly.

Once a random state has been generated, the heavy lifting is done by the Ruby formula:

state + "-" + ("%02d" % random(1, from_dataset("US Districts by State", "Number_of_CDs", State:state).to_i))
  • from_dataset pulls in the number of Congressional Districts from the US Districts by State dataset you uploaded earlier, using state as a primary key.
  • .to_i converts the number string returned by from_dataset to an integer.
  • random generates a random number between 1 and the total number of districts the state has.
  • "%02d" formats the number to have a leading 0 in case the random number generated is less than 10.
  • the rest just concatenates the state and a hyphen and the number.
