That way I could plug in direct if there's no public WiFi the Pi can connect to, and set my Mac's IP to 10.0.100.2 or something, and still access the Pi. I couldn't necessarily rely on zeroconf/bonjour either.

Just wanted to mention that I've set up a static IP address on the eth0 interface in
/etc/dhcpcd.conf
