This is my take on dotfiles https://github.com/kairichard/lace. It comes a gem and uses yaml as configuration markup. So basically you run lace fetch namespace/user and it fetches that from github and does whatever is configured the .lace.yml. See https://github.com/kairichard/dotfiles/blob/master/.lace.yml for a full example.
