from Nick Patterson:

"SheetMusic" is not a good term for the wider musical community. Although it's often used by casual users to refer to any printed musical notation, for music specialists it usually refers to something specific. This is the definition in Grove Music Online, a standard reference work:

"A term applied to a single item of published music, typically a piano piece or a popular song in “short score” (i.e., a version in which the accompaniment is reduced to a piano part and usually also to chord symbols or tablature so that it may be realized on plucked string instruments)."

"Music Score" is the better, more standard term for printed music notation. One problem with that, of course, is that it doesn't capture other forms of musical notation, i.e. in manuscript form, parts for single instruments, or other musical systems of notation.

I'm just starting to think about this, so more nuance might be needed, but I wonder if "MusicNotation" might be a better "object" as a target for processes? This would cover: sheet music, music scores, experimental graphic musical notation, non-Western musical notation systems, and music manuscripts in all their variety. It also is "carrier-neutral" and thus could indicate both physical hard-copies as well as electronically-encoded data or page images. It might also make sense to align definitions of any such term with RDA music cataloging rules or other existing standards.

The proposal makes sense. Why hasn’t it been discussed or approved?
