In a way this is a foolish question as Gnome (or a derivative) was mentioned but u also had guide for i3wm.
So does this mean that it needs i3wm and gnome to get it working? I've tried to get it work on plain i3wm. It did open up gvim but no text was sent.

The way you call the command is basically irrelevant. Gnome, i3, straight from the cli, whatever.
What do you mean by "no text was sent?".
Sent where? When? I believe this version of vim-anywhere simply opens up an empty vim and then saves the contents to the clipboard on exit
ps there is a PR to allow prepopulating the vim buffer with the current cliopboard contents. is that maybe what you were getting at? #99
