Key Highlights
In August 2019, cdnjs served almost 165 billion requests. 🖥
This is back in-line with what we would expect from previous months and supports the hypothesis that the spike seen last month was due to an attack.
We used over 2.8 petabytes of bandwidth to serve cdnjs requests this month. 📤
That works out to 90.6 terabytes of data and 5.3 billion requests each day. 🤯
Each request used, on average, 17.1 KB of data, similar to the 16-17 KB seen in months before but not indicating a trend. 🔍
Library Highlights
jQuery (3.3.1) was back at the top once again with 4.3 billion requests.
This is up on June and July where we had seen 3.9 & 4.2 billion, but still down from April and May where requests were at 6 & 4.8 billion respectively.
The top library overall was gsap with 10.8 billion combined requests.
jQuery came a close second with a total of 10.6 billion combined requests in the top 100 resources. These totals were split across 14 different versions for gsap and 12 versions for jQuery.
FontAwesome (4.7.0) was once again very popular with 7.8 billion requests this month, up from 7.7 last month and 7.5 in June.
4.4.0 is also still a popular version alongside 4.3.0 & 4.6.3 which together account for another 971 million requests. Version 5 has still not yet made an appearance in the top 100 cdnjs resources.
AmazeUI (2.7.2) has jumped from 7th to 5th place this month, with 2.4 billion requests.
This is up from last month where the single-file resource was a new contender to the list with 1.7 billion requests.
Total Number of Requests
The first important stat that we are given is the total number of requests sent to cdnjs.cloudflare.com.
Cloudflare provides this number to us at a 1% sample for the whole month, giving 1,645,881,221 at 1%.
This is 164,588,122,100 when multiplied up to 100%.
We are also given a number of requests for 3 days at a 100% sample, which is 15,858,472,538.
This is 163,870,882,893 when recalculated for the 31 days of August.
To provide the best possible estimate for the entire month, an average of both numbers will be used to generate the estimate for the final number of requests for the month.
This results in cdnjs serving approximately 164,229,502,496.5 requests in August.
Almost 165 billion requests this month or 5.2 billion requests each day. 🖥
This is down from the 190 billion last month but is far more in-line with what we would expect from previous months, with May and June serving 175 & 151 billion requests respectively.
Total Bandwidth Usage
Another great stat that Cloudflare has given us again is the bandwidth usage for the cdnjs.cloudflare.com domain.
This number, like total requests, is provided at a 1% sample for the month and in gigabytes: 28,516.85 GB.
This is 2,851,685 GB or 2.9 PB when multiplied up to be 100%.
Additionally, a 3 day 100% sample is given by Cloudflare at 267,516.89 GB.
This results in 2,764,341.2 GB or 2.8 PB for the month.
As with the total number of requests and due to the significant difference between the two, both numbers will be used to calculate an average for the final estimate of bandwidth consumed this month.
This produces the estimate of 2,808,013.1 GB of bandwidth used for this month.
This gives us a massive bandwidth consumption of 2.8 petabytes of data for cdnjs requests in August. 🤯
Much like the total request count, this is down on last month but is far more in-line with previous months, such as May and June where we saw 2.9 & 2.5 PB respectively.
