One problem: The first text element on each page (clubname) always exists but the second (website) doesn't. If the second element is blank, the first element picks up the paragraph style for the second. In this case the first element is in a separate text frame from the subsequent elements. The subsequent elements flow into a second frame with different margins. I don't know if that is relevant or not.

relevant ? I guess yes, as styles should not differ from your template. But I just don't get it from your explanations.
can you attach your sla? (not via email, it will not get through, needs to be done via github website, sorry).
BTW: I noticed the elements seem to move down the page a little on each new page. After 80 pages the difference was a little over 1mm (I was using millimetres as the page was A5 and that was the only unit that didn't introduce decimal places). The drift is consistent.
