Principle

  • We are interested in Widely Used file formats.
  • We are more interested in Open Format than Proprietary format.

Open format

Multimedia

  • GIF - Graphics Interchange Format, patents expired 2004 become free
  • JPEG 2000 – an image format standardized by ISO/IEC
  • PNG – a raster image format standardized by ISO/IEC

Text

  • Plain text - like ASCII
  • PDF - open standard for documents exchange
  • Office Open XML - OOXML for Microsoft Office software

Archiving

  • ZIP — for both archiving and compression

Other

  • FreeOTFE — container for encrypted data
  • TrueCrypt — container for encrypted data
  • WebDav — internet filesystem format, ISO
  • XML - a general-purpose markup language, standardized by W3C

Proprietary format
