If the codename could be hidden by default that would help students maintain privacy. As well when the page reloads the name re-appears if I select the hidden option. Is there a way that that setting can transfer?

This could be changed. Quick question that may be difficult to answer based on how much you've used ThoughtSwap thus far: is it problematic for another student or the teacher or whomever to know my codename? That is, you knowing that I'm Almond ShadowOrchid doesn't tell you anything about my participation (or lack thereof) in ThoughtSwap.
In an effort to remain usable, but not to sacrifice anonymity, we do hide the individual's previous "thoughts" from this session by default, but offer a control to show them in case they need to refer to their work, sort of along the lines of the interaction you're proposing.
