About the group

Left Forum is one of the biggest progressive/left-wing convergences on the globe with 4,500 attendees every year coming to NYC, currently we are spreading into new cities, the first one is Los Angeles Novemebr 3rd to 5th. But more are coming.

To cope with the work we need to bring our website up to date. It is still not very user friendly and has some technical issues.

We also want to expand the website. Previous sites of us entirely just focused on functionalities like: submission of events for conferences, administering and scheduling of those. And off course displaying that information online.
We had registration for conferences and donation handled via the site.

But we sit on a lot of data (of panelists, organizations, panel videos, documents etc.), this data can become very useful to activist, campaigners, organizers, academics etc. working for social change. Here we would like to develop something new with developers who are interested in social change as well.

Our current website www.leftforum.org runs on drupal 7 and has not much features. We want to bring it to drupal 8 but at the same time expand the features of the site to to make data more accessible for the progressive community.

If you're an organization and you have an idea for a project, think about these questions before coming to the community:

What kind of technical project is this? (A website? An app? A mobile service? A campaign?)

Website

What stage is the project at? (Ideation, implementation, or beta?)

Ideation

What is the problem you are trying to solve, and why is it a problem?

Progressive and Left-wing community is very fragmented and Left Forum is a 40year old insitution which could help to provide some more overview.

Do you know of any similar solutions? And what was lacking in the solution?

Left Forum is unique. There is no other conference like this of this size. The world social forum is kind of similar.
