So.. you've heard it here first.. BYG is well no longer BYG. Oh The Biomes You'll Go is officially rebranding to our 1.20 "sequel" Oh The Biomes We've Gone. SO what does this mean?
Why are we rebranding?
BYG has been a staple name in the modding community for years! We are so incredibly grateful for our community who have helped shape this mod into what it currently is today. That being said, we as a team have taken on new developers (yes the old ones are still here too) and really coming from myself (AOCAWOL) BYG was designed as a solo adventure, as that was my original experience when creating this mod. I used to make this mod completely myself and so the branding of BYG reflected this idea of a solo adventure however as the PotionStudios team has increased, this mod is no longer a solo journey so we wanted a rebrand that encompassed the meaning of teamwork and the power of adventuring together.
From a coding perspective, BYG was in desperate need of a COMPLETE rewrite. Our code was incredibly messy and ununified which was very difficult for us to port to future updates of MC which is why we have taken so long for this port. Our dev team has been incredibly hard at work trying to make the code side of the mod more user-friendly and easier for long-term bug fixing and maintenance. However, just because BYG is rebranding doesn't mean it isn't going to contain the content you all love.
So what is happening to the Content?
The content removals/reworks in our previous discussion post "BYG 1.20... Lets Talk About It!" is still our goal with some slight adjustments. We will NOT be releasing BWG (new name cool right?) with the Nether & End content and will instead purely focus on high-quality overworld content. HOWEVER, I can promise you all that the Nether & End contents are planned to be re-added with brand new life. BWG's content focuses more on expanding/encouraging new ways of playing while also keeping them optional to the player. We also aim to make every biome feel fresh and exciting for players to find. BWG is going to be a long journey filled with exciting new and revamped content. We have a large majority of the overworld biomes coming back but also a good handful with large reworks with new mobs, blocks, and decorations. We are also trying to stray away from progression-based impacts (aka our ores and tools/armors being removed). We don't want to call this a "sequel" to BYG because we aren't ultimately completely doing content from scratch. However, we do feel like the changes/code redoes are significant enough for a semi-clean sweep.
So what happens to my old world?
So, unfortunately, worlds that used BYG will not be able to use BWG. This is because of complete rewrites of our code including our registry which blocks/items/mobs etc. all depend on to function properly. However, it is important to remember that BYG has pretty much never been able to do this properly and you should never try to update your modded worlds to new versions of MC as you are basically guaranteed to break it. You're pre-1.20 BYG worlds are gonna have to stay that way but we hope that you can make new exciting worlds with BWG's content. We understand that this is an upsetting announcement for some but please understand our perspective as devs and that ultimately this was the only way for us to continue developing the mod you have all come to love.
What's next?
So.. following this announcement, we are aiming to launch PATREON EXCLUSIVE indev/alpha player testing for a few weeks then a schedule of releasing a beta build to Patreon then a public beta than a full release for everyone. We can't give you a final date for release because depending on the bugs and suggestions based on the alpha we may need to adjust our timeline.
All of us at Potion Studios are so grateful for you all and cannot wait to share what we have been cooking up content-wise. I've spent a ton of time concepting and bouncing ideas back and forth with the team and BWG's release will truly be something our team is proud to push forward.
