This could be taken as a very large item, but I'm hoping we can limit an initial round of refactoring to just do some cleanup and prep for being able to support creature models in-game. Figuring this is a @begla area, although @KaiKratz has also been itching to have rendering make more sense ;-)

Could also relate to / include review for: #126 (Geometry Shader based Rendering), #157 (config issue - resolved?), #184 (architecture / state issue - resolved?)

Closing this as an old issue since we added creature models months ago :-)
