Checks

  • I provided nvram backup file
  • I provided sticker photo

Console model

SCHP-70012

Describe the issue

1: I downloaded Mechapwn 3.0 RC4 formatted to fat32
2: plug into ps2 try to launch through ULaunchElf 4.43x
3: go to file browser, goes to mass and launch the mechapwn file
4:Go to the world map menu, (press x to continue)
5: Freezes while backing up nvram (present problem)
cant get further than that to unlock the region restrictions.

I did read that 3rd party controllers will upset the coding, which i have. Is my controller my problem? It just doesn't seem like that would be a likely factor, any help would be appreciated

Yes, fat32 is the correct format. Probably your usb isnt compatible, try to find another one.

He said in the OP : 1: I downloaded Mechapwn 3.0 RC4 formatted to fat32 so the usb key is in the right format, nobody talked about exfat.

I wonder about which version of wLaunchELF you're using?

Have you updated it separately, by any chance?

I was having an issue that presented EXACTLY like you're describing, UNTIL I rolled-back from the custom-feature-selector version of wLaunchELF that I had downloaded from the official site, back to the vanilla version that's packed-in with FMCB.

Seems like (for me, at least) MechaPWN will only start from the FMCB installer's vanilla-version of wLaunchELF (AKA mc?:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF). Maybe it could be worth reinstalling FreeMCBoot again (without updating wLaunchELF separately) to see if that fixes it. (Oh, and ofc don't forget to choose the multi- "Install for All PS2s" option.)

I hope that helps!

It can be related to this bug:
ps2homebrew/wLaunchELF#116

I was also encountering problems like this when using the using the exFAT install of FreeMCBoot. I'm curious if you might be using that?

YMMV, but I finally had success yesterday by taking a "fresh-start" approach:

I used MechaPWN to restore my original NVRAM; then formatted the (backed up) PS2 memory card; then did a fresh, non-exFAT, install of FreeMCBoot; and then FAT32-formatted a flash-drive and put ONLY MechaPWN on it.
So Virgin-everything, vanilla-everything, basically. This time the hack process looked exactly the same as before (backup, unplug, re-run the ELF, retail->DEX, set region to USA multi-7, chose "factory default", unplug, reboot.), only now the burned media is actually working!

I really hope it works for you, too. Good luck.
