Curriculum request: Add estimated length of lesson #353
Comments
I would keep the upper end of the limits and the caveat about variability.
The lower end is based more on rushing highly conceptual content because
there are fewer hands on elements, which must be covered in depth in later
sections if skipped or barely mentioned.
The 2-4 hour range also makes it awkward to schedule around meals or
multiple days: when to sequence is often based on instructor availability
rather than content progression.
Have I taught it faster? yes, under constraints: like putting tidy & git
in the same 4 hour day because the website shows 2 hours each. And then
learning 1 of the 4 hours was lunch.
Thanks for letting me add these thoughts to the document history, even if
closed as resolved. I appreciate the space to advocate for slowing down
and making space for silent thought and brave sharing of "I don't
understand yet, can we walk through it again?"

The @LibraryCarpentry/curriculum-advisors
<https://github.com/orgs/LibraryCarpentry/teams/curriculum-advisors>
recently updated the LC lessons page
<https://librarycarpentry.org/lessons/> to add a column with an estimated
length for each lesson that workshop organizers can use to help them plan
workshops. We used estimated times from the YAML teaching and exercises
metadata fields
<https://carpentries.github.io/sandpaper-docs/episodes.html#yaml-metadata>from
your lesson to come up with the initial estimated length. Two requests:
1. Please reply here if you want to suggest a different estimated
length for the lessons page and I will update it there.
2. If our estimate was incorrect, it would be great if you can update
the episode YAML metadata to reflect more accurate times.
If the estimated time looks good to you, feel free to close the issue.
