Ideally, users should have the choice to print out citations as either bibtex-formatted blocks or as plain text references. There should be one reference file of bibtex-style software references, and this can be parsed into a reasonable reference using standard bibtex. There are several projects that attempt to parse bibtex with python, but many of these seem unreliable based on the discussion. This thread is several years old, so these packages need to be reevaluated. It is also debatable whether or not citationhelper (which currently very minimal requirements) should be dependent on one of these packages.
It may be helpful for the report to print out a bibtex formatted citation block instead of/in addition to the plain text citation.
