Description

Languages other than English exported as strange character. Example Language: Tamil

The book exporting properly in other options prince, ebook etc.

Expected behaviour

exporting actual unicode language

Actual behaviour
Strange characters exported

System Information

  • mPDF for Pressbooks: Version 3.2.1
  • Pressbooks: Version 5.4.5
  • WordPress: [Enter WP Version number here]

To add to this issue:

In global theme options, fonts selected in "Language and script support" are not applied in MPDF, but they are applied in Prince. I only tested this with Arabic, but I can test the other fonts if that is useful. Let me know!

To reproduce:

  1. Enable "Arabic" as a font in global theme options.
  2. Add Arabic text to a chapter.
  3. Export the book as Digital PDF and mPDF.
  4. Compare files. Digital PDF will show Arabic characters, mPDF will show a bunch of little boxes, as shown in screenshot above.
