Currently, the old wood slab (43:2 / double_stone_slab:2) is retextured as a wooden crate. It is named as a slab in-game and can only be placed via commands/WE.
In 1.13, this block has a new name: Petrified Oak Slab. I do not think it has a texture (same as normal oak slab), but it is now listed in the creative inventory.
Does anyone know if it, does, in fact, have a unique texture? If not, we'll try to rename it to Crate.

So, CTM now lets us add an infinite number of custom textures for nameable blocks (which includes all containers). So, we can have as many textures for the new Barrels as we want!
Galvin and I were discussing, and we'd like to get a proper barrel texture for the normal look, but keep the many Crate variants as alternates (accessed by renaming the barrel).
Also, as for Petrified Oak, it has no texture... so we have the block available to use however we want. There is a top slab, bottom slab, and full block (double slab), each with waterlogged variants, for a total of six available block IDs.

Petrified Oak Slab vs Crate
Petrified Oak Slab - unused block ID

The Barrel has a new texture from SMP. I have also added extra textures for the Barrel, which are the old crate textures. All are tested and working in-game.
Petrified Oak remains unused, we can do whatever we want with it.
